Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) technologies are recent compared to traditional manufacturing processes like casting and forging, and are scarce in material databases used to design mechanical components. This is especially true for fatigue data, making the design of parts more challenging and hindering the growth of additive manufacturing technologies in the industry.
This work aims to present the database set up by CETIM, as well as main trends observed in different material/process couples studied. This work undertaken within the BDD-FA (Additive Manufacturing Materials Database) project at CETIM will be put into perspective for an industrial exploitation of the data.
Firstly, the experimental campaign was launched on more than 5400 specimens divided into nine material/process couples (Powder Bed Fusion - Laser Beam (PBF-LB) with AISI420, 316L, Copper, Inco625 and Inco718 ; Metal Binder Jetting (MBJ) with 17-4PH ; Direct Energy Deposition –Wire Arc (DED-WA) also known as Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) with 17-4PH and Duplex 2209. Then, mechanical and microstructural properties of these materials have been characterized both in the as-printed state and after heat treatment. Particular attention was given to the influence of manufacturing defects on fatigue strength. Kitagawa diagrams have been established and the Paris law has been defined [1]–[7].
This database contributes to an easy reading of material data and fatigue strength analysis of additive manufacturing parts for industrial purposes. Finally, this tool helps sizing AM parts for fatigue applications and contributes to the implementation of these technologies in industry.
