80 Fatigue Life Evaluation of a Welded Joint Used in Heavy Machinery Using Different Approaches

Welded connections are commonly used in construction of heavy machinery equipment. Fatigue life of welded connections are investigated throughly in the literature. Finite element method is generally used to determine the stress state of a structure with welds under complex loading scenarios. Determining the mean and amplitude values of stress components and selecting the appropriate S-N curve are important steps in fatigue evaluation. However, since there is always an inherent singularity in the weld geometry, it is not always straightforward to determine the stress value at critical locations of the weld, such as the tip or root. The standards recommend different approaches to eliminate singularities and obtain reliable values. Nominal stress, structural hot spot stress and effective notch radius methods are described in standards and widely used. In this study, the load-bearing welded connection of a high-capacity machinery was examined based on different approaches defined in FKM and Eurocode standards. The approaches considered in the study were compared according to modeling effort and obtained fatigue life.
